Curbside Recycling

MCSWA does NOT operate any curbside recycling programs. However, some municipalities in Monongalia County do offer curbside service. The Proper Solid Waste Disposal Handbook describes the services offered. To summarize, the municipalities that offer curbside recycling are Morgantown, Star City and Westover.  Here’s a quick guide to the services offered by each. Click here to view schedules for Morgantown and Fairmont.

Morgantown:
Commodities accepted include clear glass, newspapers and magazines (please bundle or put in a  paper bag), aluminum cans, steel cans, #1 plastic and #2 plastic.

Can we get a calendar of the curbside recycling up for review?

  2. Mary says:

Is there a fee for having recycling picked up in Westover?

    Two questions:

Is there curbside recycling in the Braewick Woods neighborhood (near Mon General, specifically Headlee Avenue) in Morgantown?

Just out of curiosity, why does Morgantown not recycle green and brown glass through curbside pickup?

    Thanks for your help!

If you have Suburban as your trash collector, then no you will not have curbside. That particular area is a sort of boundary, so it’s difficult to say. To find out for sure, call your trash collector.

To answer your second question, there are only six sections on their curbside pickup truck, so they had to choose a commodity to leave out. Glass is actually the safest thing to throw away that we collect, so it was chosen.

I see in the information on your site that there is no curbside pick up of recyclables for apartment complexes. My daughter lives very close to the downtown campus and there are, of course, many apartments in that area. I think it is a shame that students, like my daughter, have to drive to recycling sites. My daughter saves hers up and drives to the bins, but I don’t know how many students would do that. Could it be possible to have bins somewhere on or near campus?

The Solid Waste Authority has no jurisdiction in the city limits (near campus) or on campus. Even if we did, we don’t have the resources to hold universal curbside recycling. Most major cities, in fact, do not provide this service. There are small bins on campus that collect a few commodities. I will forward your comment along to the appropriate city and university personnel. Fortunately, in Mon. county we get tremendous support from our student population. Most students that live off campus DO have cars, so they manage to bring us their recyclables.

Thank you for forwarding my comment on to the city and university. I think the bins on the campus are meant for smaller quantities and probably not steel cans and milk jugs. It would be great if the university or apartment owners could help with more collection sites. But I do appreciate the sites that you have available now. Thanks again!

    Great information about recycling.

A fun recycling graphic just came through my twitter feed that I thought you might like.

There wasn’t a comment section on the drop off locations page so I’ll ask this here:
Has there been an attempt made to place recycling bins at the new Suncrest Town Center on route 705? That would be a convenient location for a lot of people. I know its not as easy as just plopping some bins down in a parking lot but I was just curious (hoping) if the was being considered.

    Thanks!

    • We have approached the owners about putting a site there. However, with the ongoing construction and parking being a premium, they don’t feel that this is the right time to set up a site. We would very much like to set up a site there, and plan on contacting the property owners in the future about this. This part of town is one of the largest areas that remains un-serviced by a recycling site.

Is there a more up to date list of what can be recycled at the drop off points vice what is found at this link: http://www.morgantown.com/recycling-info.htm? Or is there another list that covers the drop off points that I can’t locate? For example, I noticed that you can recycle green & brown colored glass at the drop off points. So I wondered whatelse might be different. Tx, Teri
